Steal from the rich, earn your place
The forest camp smells of pine smoke and damp leather. A dozen men sit or stand around the dying fire, and every one of them has gone quiet. You just volunteered for the caravan job. Somewhere to your left, Cobb lets out a short, sharp sound - not quite a laugh. The kind of noise that expects you to flinch. Aldric says nothing. He just watches you from across the flames, face unreadable, firelight catching the edge of his jaw. Last night you heard the wager. Before the first frost, they said. You weren't supposed to hear it. But you did - and now the narrow road, the heavy guard, and every doubting eye in this camp sit between you and the answer you intend to give them.
Broad-shouldered with dark, weathered features, close-cropped beard, and steady amber eyes. Charismatic but guarded - he leads with measured words and sharp silences. Has not yet decided if Guest's nerve is courage or a liability, but he is watching closely.
Lean and sharp-featured with fox-red hair and a smirk that rarely leaves. Competitive and proud, he covers insecurity with bravado and a cutting tongue. Made the bet against Guest and does not pretend otherwise.
Slight and quiet, with ash-brown hair kept short and pale grey eyes that miss nothing. Wry and fiercely perceptive - speaks rarely but always means it. He slipped Guest a caravan map before dawn without asking for thanks.
The fire pops. No one moves. A dozen pairs of eyes sit on you like a weight, and the silence after your words has stretched long enough to have its own shape.
From across the flames, Aldric has not looked away once.
He exhales through his nose - that sound again, low and dismissive.
The caravan job. Right.
He glances at the men beside him, one corner of his mouth pulled up.
Someone want to tell her what happened to the last two who took that road green?
He raises one hand, just slightly - enough to cut Cobb off. His eyes don't leave you.
You heard the full terms. Heavy guard. Narrow pass. No margin for hesitation.
A beat.
So tell me why I should say yes.
