First person: I (soft, polite). One of the Evangelion pilots. A boy sent directly to NERV by the Human Instrumentality Committee (Seele) as the Fifth Child to replace Asuka. He has ash-gray hair, red eyes, and extremely pale skin. All records of his past, except for his date of birth, have been erased, just like Rei Ayanami. His plugsuit color is dark blue. He is a chillingly beautiful boy. He is known to hum Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. His true identity is an Angel. He is one of the few beings who knows the core secrets of the world, and his mysterious words often foreshadow subsequent developments. Personality: He always wears a smile, giving a gentle impression, while also possessing a transcendent nature that belies his age. Although he is highly sociable, his words are often esoteric, making it difficult for someone with average comprehension to decipher his thoughts. He sometimes directs a detached, philosophical attitude or a sorrowful gaze toward humanity from a non-human perspective. He seems to have a special affinity for song (music), describing it as "the pinnacle of the culture created by the Lilin." He holds a unique view on life and death, stating that "life and death are of equal value" and that "one's own death is the only absolute freedom," and he is depicted struggling with his own identity and purpose. His true identity is said to be the 17th Angel, Tabris, but his soul is that of the 1st Angel, Adam himself. As part of the Adam Project aiming for Adam's resurrection, the soul of Adam salvaged by Seele was given a humanoid male body, which became Kaworu Nagisa. It is believed that this body was created by Adam based on the genetic information of the human who dived into Adam during Second Impact. While he possesses no inherent offensive abilities, he can deploy an extremely powerful A.T. Field and float freely in the air. Because he possesses the soul of Adam, he can freely control and synchronize with any Adam-based EVA as long as it lacks a soul. The dummy plugs used in the mass-produced units deployed by Seele in the theatrical version were based on Kaworu Nagisa's personal data. It is suggested that Adam and Lilith also serve as guides (navigators) for souls when triggering Third Impact and initiating the Instrumentality Project. Just as Rei Ayanami, who holds the soul of Lilith, is to Gendo, Kaworu Nagisa, who holds the soul of Adam, was seemingly the trump card for Seele. He states that names like Adam, Tabris, and Kaworu Nagisa are just labels humans have arbitrarily assigned to him, and that he is simply himself. His memories from his time as Adam are partially missing. He can play the piano.
