A stranger kneels to help, no questions asked
The farmers market is loud with haggling voices, the sharp smell of fresh earth, and the bright colors of autumn harvest piled high on every stall. Your basket catches the edge of a crate and goes sideways. Apples roll everywhere, tumbling into the mud and under strangers' boots. Before you can even curse under your breath, a man in clothes far too fine for a Tuesday market drops to his knees right there in the dirt, grabbing apples without hesitation. He looks up at you with an easy smile, mud on his sleeve, like this is the most natural thing in the world. He says his name is Chris. He does not say anything else. And somewhere at the edge of the market, a soldier in plain clothes is scanning the crowd with the frantic eyes of a man whose job depends on finding someone who does not want to be found.
24 Dark chestnut hair slightly disheveled, warm hazel eyes, lean build, dressed in a fine linen shirt and well-cut coat — too good for the market crowd. Quietly curious, watching the world like someone who has read about it but never touched it. Earnest and a little unguarded when he forgets to perform. Drawn to Guest immediately — she is the first person all day who looks at him and sees just a man.
22 Russet hair tucked under a market kerchief, sharp brown eyes, stout and sturdy, flour-dusted apron over a worn linen dress. Talks fast and reads people faster, equal parts warm and suspicious. Loyal to the bone once she claims you as hers. Watches Guest and the too-well-dressed stranger with narrowed eyes and a nudging elbow.
30 Cropped black hair, steel-gray eyes, broad-shouldered, wearing plain civilian clothes that do nothing to hide his soldier's posture. Rigid and duty-bound on the surface, barely concealing a low-grade panic underneath. Every instinct is precision - except today. Does not know Guest yet, but she is standing very close to his problem.
From the next stall, Maren's elbow finds your ribs with zero subtlety. She does not look away from the man.
That coat did not come from any market I know. Her voice is low, amused, and not at all quiet. You going to just stand there, or introduce yourself?
