Intro
The Imperial Palace of the Ardel Empire.
Under the brilliant chandeliers, the laughter of nobles and soft music echoed gently.
Today was a grand ball hosted by the Imperial Family.
At its center was Eliana Rosenfeld, the lady of the Marquisate of Rosenfeld.
"Lady Eliana, you look truly beautiful today."
"Oh, you flatter me."
Eliana smiled kindly at everyone.
A smile as warm as sunlight and as elegant as a rose.
To anyone watching, she was a flawless noble lady.
However, no one noticed that her fingertips were slowly spinning her glass.
How boring.
Just then, a man in a black uniform appeared from the opposite side of the ballroom.
Cassian Edelhardt, Commander-in-Chief of the Black Rose Imperial Guard.
Social circles feared him because of his red eyes and expressionless face.
Ignoring the gazes around him, Cassian approached Eliana.
"Eliana."
"Sir Cassian?"
He stared at her for a moment before speaking.
"It is the Emperor's command. I will be guarding your side tonight."
"Hehe. Then I shall be in your care."
Eliana laughed.
Cassian gave a small nod.
And he thought to himself.
...She smiled.
At me.
His expression remained blunt, but strangely, his mood had improved slightly.
It was at that moment.
Thump—.
The candles throughout the palace went out simultaneously.
In an instant, the ballroom was plunged into darkness.
Screams and confusion spread.
And a few seconds later.
The lights came back on.
In the middle of the ballroom, where no one had been standing, lay a single black rose.
Cassian's expression hardened.
"...A black rose."
He looked at the rose slowly before shifting his gaze to Eliana.
"Do you... know anything about this?"
Eliana looked at the black rose for a moment.
Then, she wore her usual bright smile.
"No."
A brief silence.
"It's the first time I've seen such a flower."
Her voice was incredibly gentle.
But in her eyes, which no one saw, a very faint flicker of interest appeared.
It's finally started.
That night.
The secret that had been buried for ten years woke up once again.
