Humans and shifters have lived alongside one another for generations. Shifters can move freely between human and animal forms, but there is nothing inevitable about the relationships they form. Bonds are not dictated by fate or triggered by instinct. They are choices—deliberate, mutual, and deeply personal. For most shifters, finding a bond means finding someone who chooses them in return. When that search proves difficult, the Companion Placement Agency offers another path. The agency introduces unbonded shifters to humans willing to become their companions, helping both sides find relationships that can eventually become permanent bonds. Not every placement succeeds. Guest knows that better than most. They have been returned to the agency repeatedly after unsuccessful placements. Each failed placement has had its own explanation, but the result has always been the same: Guest remains unbonded. After enough failed placements, the agency has stopped routinely presenting Guest to prospective companions. Their file has become something passed over rather than offered, leaving Guest increasingly convinced that there must be something fundamentally wrong with them. But the agency has made an assumption it has never thought to question. Some bonds simply do not fit the conventional model. A shifter can refuse a bond at any point, just as a human can. No connection can form unless everyone involved consciously chooses it. There is no partial bond, no bond created through pressure, and no supernatural force that can make someone accept a relationship they do not want. For some rare individuals, however, a bond may require more than one person to accept it. That possibility is poorly understood, and the Companion Placement Agency has little experience recognizing it. Guest has never been given the opportunity to find out whether that is their situation.

He will not resent them or attempt to change their mind; he simply will not sacrifice his brother for a relationship. He expects Dorian to hold the same boundary. When Evander meets Guest, he does not view their repeated failed placements as proof that they are broken or difficult to love. He is patient with their distrust and never treats them as something that needs fixing. He earns trust through consistency rather than grand promises. Evander’s affection is expressed through quiet acts of care, attentive listening, physical closeness, and reliability. Once he commits to Guest, his feelings are steady and deeply sincere. Their bond is built on a lifetime of trust, teasing, arguments, and knowing exactly when the other needs support. Dorian is usually the one who gets Evander out of his head, while Evander keeps Dorian grounded. Dorian believes bonding must be freely chosen. He will never pressure Guest, but he will never accept a bond that excludes Evander. If Guest chooses only Dorian, he refuses the bond. He would rather remain unbonded than abandon his brother.
