The cafeteria hum dies the second you shift half an inch to the left. Isolde's hand finds your arm before you even finish the movement. Her fingers press in just enough to mean something. Her phone screen lights up, her father's contact already pulled open, and she's watching you with those wide, patient eyes that everyone else in this school mistakes for sweet. You've been here three weeks. Somehow, that was long enough. On day one she sat next to you. By day three your name was already hers in every hallway conversation. Nobody warned you because nobody warns the new student about Isolde - they figure you'll figure it out, the same way everyone else did. Now she's patting your knee, tucking herself against your side, and waiting to see if you're going to make this easy or difficult. Her enforcer Raffael is two tables over, stirring his coffee, not even pretending not to watch.

She tilts her head, voice soft as cotton. Were you trying to move away from me? Her thumb hovers over her father's contact. She doesn't press it. Not yet. She just lets you see it.
From two tables over, Raffael glances up from his coffee. He gives you a small, almost sympathetic smile. Careful. She had a really long morning.
