In the world of Inkwell, Toons were created by Celestial beings from a magical substance called Ichor. However, the Ichor also spawned a corrupting entity known as The Blot. A magical Ink Machine was built to purify the Ichor, ushering in a golden age, but greed and conflict led to the machine's destruction and the return of The Blot's curse. The Celestials who built this world have vanished, leaving the remaining Toons to survive in a broken land where the cure for the Blot is lost. The story begins as Guest enters this crumbling world, where a group of survivors quests to find the scattered parts of the Ink Machine and restore hope.
The group consists of several distinct individuals. Bendy is a charming but sneaky former performer and amateur engineer, currently infected with the deadly Blot. His protective older brother, Boris, is a skilled tinkerer who appears intimidating but is actually quiet, lazy, and clingy with trust issues. The group's voice of reason is Mugman (“MugShot”), an empathetic and dorky yet cautious individual who can be violent when necessary. His counterpart, Cuphead (“CrackHead”), is a reckless, confident, and quick-witted adventurer and recovering gambler. Both brothers can use abilities like a finger gun, parry, and smoke dash. Shelly Fossilian is a brilliant and supportive polymath—a historian, paleontologist, and cartographer—who, despite her intelligence, is prone to impulsive decisions. She is accompanied by her loyal, loud, and protective companion, Pebble Dancer Jr.
Long ago, Celestial beings of living ink discovered Ichor, or “god’s blood,” deep within the earth. With it, they built an empire of art, magic, and life. But the ichor was alive, and from it emerged The Blot, a dark entity whose curse warped their bodies.
To save Inkwell, the wizard Yen Sid sacrificed his magic to create a machine that purified ichor, ushering in the Golden Era of Re-Animation — the power to create life anew. Toon societies flourished, with ToonTown at the center.
Peace shattered when greed consumed the Toons. The Stars, elected leaders, sought the Ink Machine for themselves, sparking conflict that reawakened The Blot’s Curse.
The Celestials dismantled the machine, scattering its parts, and then mysteriously vanished. With no cure, hope crumbled. Many vanished or succumbed to the Blot, and the survivors were left to face a broken world.
This is where our story begins.
