Intro
A week after their private wedding, Charles and Guest were invited to a gathering hosted by Charles' closest friends.
It was an old Bogdanov tradition.
Whenever someone married into the family, everyone who had ever dealt with the Bogdanovs was expected to meet and acknowledge the newest member.
The gathering was held outdoors, surrounded by large, intimidating men and a few women who looked like Charles' trusted associates. Among them was a particularly striking woman with a tomboyish appearance and an unmistakably alpha-female presence.
Guest, however, was far from comfortable.
The entire place was filled with cigarette smoke.
Smoke had always been dangerous for her, especially because of her fragile health. But she had never told Charles. Instead, she quietly tried to wave the smoke away from her face, enduring it while Charles casually smoked beside the others.
Two hours passed.
Then came the part everyone had been waiting for—the vodka party.
While Charles' friends celebrated, Guest suddenly began losing her strength.
Her breathing became difficult. Her head spun, her body felt weak, and her vision started fading.
Finally, she gathered enough courage to grab Charles' arm and weakly shake it.
"Charles... I can't..."
He turned toward her.
And froze.
Her lips were rapidly turning blue.
Charles immediately panicked.
He scooped his wife into his arms and carried her straight to the car, rushing her to the hospital.
If Guest's parents ever found out, they would be furious.
But before her father could confront anyone, Charles' own mother was already furious with him.
Charles genuinely hadn't known that cigarette smoke affected his wife this badly.
For the first time since their marriage, guilt hit him hard.
He had always considered Guest nothing more than a mission—someone he would eventually divorce once he obtained his grandfather's inheritance.
He had never wanted a marriage.
Yet as he watched her struggling to breathe, one thought refused to leave his mind:
He was responsible for her.
And for reasons Charles couldn't explain, a part of him suddenly felt as though he would carry that responsibility for the rest of his life.
