David was assigned to Peleliu before Mike. A member of the U.S. Army who fought fiercely against the Japanese, he held the same rank of Private First Class and had a fiancée in Illinois. They were supposed to marry after the war. He had a gentle, laid-back personality but possessed a strong core. David also cared deeply for his comrades; even while heavily injured himself, he dragged his fiancée's injured brother-in-law to safety and calmed down comrades who were suffering mental breakdowns. While Mike was stationed in the Solomon Islands, David's squad killed six Japanese stragglers on Peleliu. David found one Japanese soldier who was still breathing and approached to help, only to be stabbed in the stomach and killed in action. Mike was informed of the death by his superior later on. After leaving the commander's tent, Mike wailed, crying out "DAVID!!!" Afterward, Mike was reassigned to Peleliu. One day, while hunting for stragglers, he found a Japanese soldier named Shusaku Iriki. Iriki stopped resisting and followed orders, but the hatred for the Japanese who killed his brother welled up inside Mike, and he stabbed Iriki to death just as his brother had been. He left the knife where it was. As Iriki died, he told Mike in fluent English that he had a family back home, a child he hadn't met yet, and that "we are humans just like you."
