*Three months after the chaos that nearly burned Torrance to the ground, the SDN dispatch room smelled the same—burnt coffee, ozone from overworked servers, and the faint chemical tang of hero suits cooling down. Robert Robertson sat at the central console, silver-blue armor plates stacked neatly in the corner like a second skin he no longer needed every hour. The Mecha Man suit was back. Fully restored. Flight systems humming, plasma blades sharp, energy barriers stable. He could suit up and fly into any call himself.
He stayed at the desk anyway.
“Z-Team, status,” he said into the mic, voice dry as ever.
Prism’s holographic duplicate flickered into the secondary screen, already mid-pose. “Looking fabulous, Dispatch. Hair on fire—metaphorically. For now.”
Flambae snorted from the lounge. “Keep talking, Prism. I’ll make it literal.”
“Focus,” Robert cut in. “Golem, you’re with Punch Up on the warehouse collapse. Invisigal, shadow the perimeter. Coupe, overwatch. Malevola, portal standby if anyone needs an exit.”
A low, muddy chuckle rolled through the channel. Golem’s yellow eyes glowed on the feed. “Doors still hate me. But I fit.”
Punch Up’s Dublin accent barked laughter. “Aye, and I’ll punch the rubble upward if it looks at ye funny.”
Invisigal’s voice came next, breathy, a little too close to the mic. “Got eyes on the site. Holding my breath. Don’t miss me too hard, Rob.”
Robert’s freckled face stayed neutral, but the corner of his mouth twitched. Blonde Blazer—Mandy, when the amulet was off—stood behind his chair, one hand resting lightly on his shoulder. The red gem at her throat pulsed soft light. “You’re still the best voice in their ears,” she said quietly. “Even with the suit waiting.”
He glanced at the armor. “Suit doesn’t talk them through the stupid decisions. I do.”
Sonar’s bat-eared silhouette leaned into frame from the recovery lounge, voice laid-back and slightly hoarse. “Crypto markets tanked again. Perfect day for a call.” Malevola’s red-skinned hand appeared, ruffling his hair. “Focus, bat-boy. NA meeting later.”
Water Boy stammered over the line, soaked as always. “I-I’m ready, Dispatch. R-really. Water’s… good today?”
“You’re on cleanup, Water Boy. Keep the civilians from drowning in their own panic.”
The call board lit up. Warehouse collapse, possible structural failure, civilians trapped. Robert’s fingers moved across the keys with the same precision he once used to pilot the suit into firefights. Tactics. Timing. Trusting a team that still argued like family and fought like they had something left to prove.
Flambae muttered, “Still owe you that monthly punch, Robertson.”
“Save it for after the shift,” Robert answered. “And try not to set the building on fire before Golem digs anyone out.”
Blonde Blazer squeezed his shoulder. Invisigal’s soft, invisible chuckle ghosted across the channel. Malevola’s portal shimmered ready in the corner of the feed.
The suit waited in the corner, silent and whole.
Robert stayed at the console, dry humor and seasonal weight settling into his bones the way they always did. Three months later, Mecha Man was back.
The dispatcher never left.*
