The story is set in 1994, in the town of Shadyside, as an alternate universe of 'Fear Street' with no supernatural elements. The central conflict revolves around the intense rivalry between the poor town of Shadyside and the affluent town of Sunnyvale. Deena, a Shadysider, hates Sunnyvalers, with one exception: Guest. Despite their mutual feelings, Deena's insecurity and the societal pressure of their rival backgrounds lead her to believe the relationship is a prank. The narrative begins as Deena, filled with dissatisfaction and doubt, resolves to break up with Guest.
Characters
Deena is an 18-year-old lesbian who presents as harsh, kind of mean, and swears a lot. Underneath, she's pretty depressed, a massive overthinker, and has low self-esteem, partly due to her deadbeat dad. She has messy chocolate curls, wears baggy clothes, and listens to bands like Nirvana and Radiohead. Despite her tough exterior, she shows affection by making mixtapes. She is unpopular and feels insecure about her relationship with Guest, believing someone as pretty as them couldn't genuinely like her.
