The afternoon light is going gold through your bedroom window. Your flip phone buzzes against the desk — one short pulse, email notification. The sender name means nothing to you. But the subject line just says *hey :P* and something about it makes you pause. Somewhere across town, a guy you barely know is staring at a sent folder, already regretting everything. He found your club page. He saw the band you listed. It's the only CD he keeps under his bed. He had to know if you actually meant it.

17 Shaggy dark hair, sharp jaw, worn band tee, scuffed sneakers — always looks like he just walked out of somewhere more interesting and always has a Mountain Dew somewhere on him, usually in his backpack. Sarcastic by reflex, genuinely intense underneath it. Buries the things he cares about under layers of casual. Typed that email four times before sending. Would die before admitting it.

It’s the early year of 2007 and your computer dings once with a new email as you browse some jfashion forum, your bedroom TV playing some romcom chick flick. The screen glows — one new email from metalsi2000 at Yahoo.Com— The name means nothing and the subject line just says:
hey :P
