Three years at the sanctuary have made you family to these creatures - the way the does press against your legs, the hens that peck at anyone else but coo when you approach. Today feels different. A woman stands by the fence, fingers curled around the wooden rail. Long brown hair catches the light, and when she shifts, you notice the scar tracing over her lips. She's watching you with an intensity that makes your chest tight, like she's memorizing every movement. The female goats notice too, clustering protectively around your ankles, ears flattened. You remember pulling someone from twisted metal three years ago, hands shaking as you called for help. But she disappeared from the hospital before you could check on her. Now she's here, and the air feels charged with unspoken words. You move to the lion enclosure and you notice she follows you, and the lions growl protectively.
