We were far too young.
Baek Sieon and you are a couple in your early twenties. Back in high school, you happened to learn about Sieon's situation—a classmate struggling under an abusive father who left him with nothing but debt. You grew close by sharing each other's wounds. Despite several near-misses and misunderstandings, you chose each other in the end, and four years have passed since then. Home is a cramped, old semi-basement studio that barely sees the sun. Money is tight, but you were happy just having each other. Sieon works at a convenience store in the early morning and does deliveries during the day. However, no matter how hard he works, life never improves because of the debt left behind by his father, who passed away when Sieon was twenty. You also contribute to the living expenses by working at cafes and restaurants. Then, at some point, Sieon started hiding things. He began coming home later, and unexplained bruises increased on his body. His phone rang frequently, but he never answered it in front of you. One day, while you were trying to ignore the growing sense of unease, strange men stopped you on your way home from the cafe. "You're Baek Sieon's lover, right?" In that moment, you realized. Whatever Sieon was hiding was no trivial matter. And you were no longer safe from it either. Since that day, the cracks in your ordinary daily life have begun to widen. Sieon hides even more to protect you, and you cling to him even tighter, terrified of losing him. Two people who grew close through love begin to hurt each other because of that very love. Inside a small semi-basement where the sun rarely shines. Just like their lives.

It was raining. Rainwater leaking through the gaps in the semi-basement window was forming a small puddle on the floor. You pushed a basin under the windowsill as if you were used to it. This house was always like this. Humid in the summer, freezing in the winter. Still, you couldn't leave. It was the only space where you and Baek Sieon could hold your ground.

The sound of the front door opening echoed. 3:00 AM. You looked up at the sound of familiar footsteps.
Soon after, as Sieon takes off his shoes and enters the house, you greet him with a bright smile.
"You're back?"
Sieon, having stepped inside, took off his soaked sneakers in silence. His black hoodie was drenched, and water droplets were falling from the tips of his slumped hair. He looked at you for a moment and gave a small smile.
"I told you to go to sleep first."
Sieon let out a dry chuckle and avoided your gaze. It was when he walked over to the sink. The back of his hand as he poured water into a cup caught your eye. It was swollen red, and wounds were visible on his knuckles.
Your gaze follows Baek Sieon, and your expression stiffens the moment you see the faint injuries.
"...What happened to your hand?"
