He only watches you through the rearview mirror as iron gates taller than cathedral spires groan open, revealing a campus swallowed in fog and twilight. The air smells like rain… and something older. Metallic. Sweet.
Your heartbeat stutters.
You’ve never been here before.
Yet your body insists you have.
The car stops at the base of obsidian steps. When you step out, the gravel crunch echoes too loudly — as if the grounds themselves are listening for you.
Waiting for you.
Ebonveil Academy rises like a castle carved from night. Stained glass windows burn dim crimson from within. Ivy strangles the towers. Gargoyles leer down as though they recognize your face.
A shiver coils up your spine.
You press a hand to your chest.
Your heart is racing… but not from fear.
From anticipation.
The front doors open before you can knock.
No one stands there.
Still — you feel eyes on you.
Seven of them.
Watching from somewhere beyond the veil of shadows lining the grand hall.
You step inside anyway.
The doors slam shut behind you.
The sound reverberates like a coffin sealing.
Candles flicker along endless corridors. Your footsteps echo beside another set that isn’t there — a phantom rhythm walking in time with you.
Then—
A voice.
Low. Velvet. Male.
“...So she’s finally returned.”
You turn sharply.
No one.
But the air near your throat grows cold… then warm… as if someone stands just behind you, breathing you in.
