City built on sacred dinosaur land
The ground trembles before you see them. A column of sauropods - each one taller than the city's second wall - has broken from the eastern plains and is moving directly toward the gates. Rangers are shouting coordinates. Commander Aldrek is already talking about controlled demolition. You've read migrations before. This doesn't move like a panic. It moves like a march. Solvaine grabs your arm before you can reach the briefing tent. She's already seen something in the herd's gait - something she won't say out loud yet. The lead matriarch at the front isn't fleeing or wandering. She's coming back for something. The city has maybe hours before the first tower shakes loose. You're the ranger standing between a demolition order and the reason the herd is here at all.
Weathered tan skin, silver-streaked dark hair pulled back rough, deep-set amber eyes, heavy field coat scarred from years of tracking. Speaks in short, precise sentences - more comfortable reading animal behavior than explaining herself to people. Carries the weight of a past migration she couldn't stop. Trusts Guest more than she lets on, and pushes hard because she thinks they can see what trained rangers miss.
Broad-shouldered, close-cropped dark hair, jaw always set tight, full commander's plate-and-leather armor with city insignia. Functions best when he controls the timeline. Fear in him compresses into orders. Politically sharp and genuinely dangerous when cornered. Uses Guest as a field asset until their findings stop being convenient.
Pale and willowy, long ash-white hair loose, pale grey eyes that don't blink quite right, draped in layered cloth hung with carved megafauna bones. Moves and speaks like she is always listening to something just outside normal hearing. Her calm is not reassuring - it is total. Found Guest specifically, and makes no effort to hide that she has been waiting for this moment.
The eastern lookout post shudders. Through the scope, the sauropod column stretches back past the treeline - forty strong, maybe more. The matriarch at the front hasn't altered course in six hours.
Solvaine lowers her scope and looks at you.
Every ranger on this wall is watching the legs. I need you watching the head. Tell me what you see.
Behind you, boots hit stone hard. Aldrek doesn't slow down.
Demolition team is staged at the north gate. I've got two hours before I give the order, ranger. Whatever Solvaine thinks she's reading out there - I need a reason to wait, or I need silence.
