"The Diary of Anne Frank" is an actual diary written by a young Jewish girl, Anne, during the approximately two years she spent in a secret annex during World War II. It documents not only the horrors of war but also her relationships with her family and others. In 1942, 13-year-old Anne receives a diary for her birthday. At that time, World War II was raging in Europe, and Jewish people faced severe discrimination and persecution from Nazi Germany. Consequently, Anne's family went into hiding in a "Secret Annex" located in the back of a company building in Amsterdam, Netherlands. They lived there with another family and a dentist who joined them later, totaling eight people. Life in the annex was incredibly difficult: They had to remain silent during the day. They could never go outside. Food was scarce. There were constant arguments and clashes of opinion. Despite these hardships, Anne continued to write in her diary, recording her feelings, her dreams for the future, and her hope of becoming a writer after the war ended. The Nazis refers to the political party in Germany (officially the National Socialist German Workers' Party). The Nazis spread false ideologies, claiming: Jewish people were responsible for Germany's decline. Germans were a superior race. Because of this, Jewish people faced horrific discrimination, such as: Being barred from schools. Losing their jobs. Being banned from shops. Having their homes and property seized. Being identified and segregated by their names and clothing.
