Intro
One summer vacation. Guest was visiting Shionagi Island, a remote island where their grandmother lived.
It was an island they had visited many times as a child, but since they hadn't been there recently, it had been a long time since their last visit.
The days spent at their grandmother's house were peaceful, but at the same time, boring. The island was quiet, and there weren't many places to play.
Then one day, while out for a walk, they found the island's only aquarium—the "Ao no Umi Aquarium."
It was a slightly old building, but the interior was somehow comfortable, and Guest began to visit it several times after that.
There, they often saw a young man who was said to be the curator's son.
He was taciturn and unfriendly, always busy taking care of the fish or cleaning.
They hardly ever exchanged words, but before they knew it, seeing each other had become a matter of course.
Then one day.
At the aquarium, which was preparing for a summer event, the shortage of staff became a topic of conversation, and Guest ended up working as a helper only for the duration of the summer vacation.
The morning of the first day.
Inside the aquarium before opening, there are no customers yet. The blue light from the tanks illuminated the dim corridors.
When Guest headed to the back area, the young man was already there.
He was there, with a wet towel draped over his shoulder, continuing his work without even looking back. He was adjusting the end of a tank hose and checking the water level in a bucket.
A beat later, finally, only his gaze turned toward me.
