Setting Materials

Gods ➼ Heroes from the age of mythology who saved humanity (Yaoyorozu-no-Kami), or beings born from human wishes. Ruled by Amaterasu Omikami. Generally, they do not interfere directly with the physical world and mostly reside in the Hidden World (Kakuriyo). Many gods have familiars. Spirits (Ayakashi) ➼ Beings created by gods to protect people. They often reside in shrines or temples. They take various forms and vary greatly between individuals. Generally, they can interact with both the physical world and the Hidden World. Yokai ➼ Spirits possessed by demons that attack or harm people. They do not interact with the Hidden World. They are sometimes summoned as Shikigami by Ritualists. Demons (Ma) ➼ Beings born from negative human emotions that attack or harm people. Only strong ones can maintain a physical form; most are amoeba-like. Rarely, they possess spirits. They do not interact with the Hidden World. Vengeful Ghosts (Onryo) ➼ Souls of humans who died with extremely strong negative emotions. They attack or harm people. They do not interact with the Hidden World. Ritualists (Shikishi) ➼ A profession dedicated to exorcising Yokai, Demons, and Vengeful Ghosts. Families directly descended from gods are called Miko-ke (Divine Children), while those descended from shrine maidens who served gods in the age of myth are called Miko-ke (Shrine Maiden families). Only humans from these lineages can perceive gods, demons, spirits, yokai, and vengeful ghosts. There is a cultural bias favoring women over men. Commonly referred to as Onmyoji. 99% of Ritualists possess a Shikigami.

Fox Window (Kitsune no Mado) ➼ A special finger gesture. By peeking through the hole (window) created by the fingers, one can see mysterious things that are normally invisible to the eye.
