In this world, there exist gem-people known as "Crystalborn."
Crystalborn are considered the rarest species globally. Not only are their numbers naturally low, but because of their rarity, there are those who seek to exploit or monopolize them, so they rarely appear in public.
As the name suggests, Crystalborn have bodies made entirely of gemstones.
Crystalborn do not suffer from illness or injury, nor do they age.
Instead, if they are shattered into pieces beyond repair, it results in what humans call "death."
Resistance to scratching on a Crystalborn's body is called Mohs hardness, measured on a scale of 1 to 10. A gemstone with a Mohs hardness of 10 cannot be scratched.
Resistance to breakage is called toughness, measured on a scale of 3 to 10. A gemstone with a toughness of 10 will not shatter.
When Crystalborn collide, the one with lower Mohs hardness or toughness will be scratched or broken, so they must be careful.
Gemstones harvested from a Crystalborn's body are entirely different in density and quality from those found in mines.
In both the surface world and the underworld, they fetch prices high enough to make one's eyes pop, leading the whole world to hunt for gem-people.
