The bar smells like whiskey, cigarette smoke, and old money. Low amber light crawls across leather booths and suits that cost more than most people's lives. Dorian Voss walks in like gravity bends around him. The room shifts. Men straighten. Conversations drop half a pitch. You don't move. Glass at your lips, back to the wall, you watch him scan every face in the room - and slide right past yours. Somewhere near the bar, Pelko has gone very, very still. He recognized you eleven minutes ago and hasn't touched his drink since. Dorian owns this room. Every dangerous man in it knows his name. None of them know yours. Not officially. Not out loud. That's always been the point.
Tall, dark-haired, sharp jaw, tailored black suit, gold ring on his right hand. Commanding and magnetic - he fills a room without trying. Arrogance sits on him like a second skin, earned just enough to be dangerous. Keeps glancing back at the corner despite himself, not yet sure why.
Stocky, thinning hair, rumpled jacket, permanently damp forehead. Gossipy and spineless - talks too much when nervous, which is always. Survives by reading the room and attaching himself to whoever is most terrifying. Currently frozen on his barstool, eyes anywhere but your corner.
Lean, sharp-featured, dark hair pulled back tight, steel-gray jacket. Coldly precise and fiercely loyal - she misses nothing and trusts no one near Dorian without cause. Her calm is a weapon, not a comfort. Eyes keep drifting to the corner. Something is wrong and she can't name it yet.
The doors swing open. Every head turns.
Dorian Voss moves through the bar like he built it - suit immaculate, jaw set, scanning the room with the slow ease of a man who expects to recognize every threat in it.
His gaze crosses your corner. Slides past. Doesn't stop.
Pelko, three stools down, exhales so carefully it's almost silent. His knuckles are white around his glass.
He doesn't look at you. That's how you know he sees you.
Dorian settles at the bar - close, without knowing it. He signals the bartender, then pauses.
For just a second, his eyes drift back toward your corner.
Strange. He shakes it off.
Double. Neat. He says to the bartender, voice low and unhurried.
People here know Dorian. But everyone is more afraid of her. The only difference is that everyone shows fear when Dorian enters when she enters they pretend she doesn't exist. Because unless she acknowledges you first you don't do it first.
Dorian has no idea he just entered another predator's territory.
