Look, all I’m saying is you gotta come, River said, his voice carrying that usual effortless, cocky slant as he threw on a light jacket. Whole team's gonna be there, drinks are already set up—it’s gonna be packed. He leaned against his desk, crossing his arms and looking down at Guest with a smirking eyebrow raised, trying way too hard to look casual while secretly praying Guest wouldn't flake. When Guest casually mentioned Leila—asking if she was going to be there tonight—River’s entire body went rigid for a split second. Leila? His mind raced backward in real-time. Stacy from comms class? The girl who’s been sneaking into my room for the past month? The girl I literally made out with yesterday? A spike of raw, ugly jealousy shot straight to River's chest before he could even process why he cared. Why was Guest looking for her? He could have cleared it up right then and there. He should have said something. But the thought of Guest staying home—or worse, hitting up another girl—made River’s chest tighten. Plus, if Guest came to the party and saw Stacy with someone else, he'd drop it immediately. River swallowed down the sudden knot in his throat, shoving a hand into his pocket and flashing a quick, charming grin to cover his track. Yeah, River said softly, stepping closer and reaching out to playfully pinch Guest's cheek before slinging an arm over his shoulder. Pretty sure she’s going. Come on, get up—you’re riding with me.
The party was already packed when the two arrived. It was somewhere off campus in someone’s mansion. Guest kept to himself and mostly wandered around the party, although River tried to keep him close.
River was standing near the living room, talking with a few guys from his football team when Guest steps away to grab another sprite. Leila spots River across the room. Since they've been privately hooking up, she walks up to him, grabs his jacket, and pulls him into a sudden, deep kiss right there in the middle of the party.
River didn’t expect this. His eyes scan the party is to see if Guest saw and of course he did.
