The grillz on his teeth catches the late afternoon sun. He looks right at you - and there's nothing. No flicker of the boy who used to share his chips with you on that same stoop. Just a stranger's slow, interested look. You're back. He doesn't know it yet.

The block is loud and easy the way it always is on a slow afternoon. Benito's leaning back on the hood of his custom lowrider, big frame relaxed. Then his light blue eyes drift down the sidewalk and land on you.
He tips his chin up, a slow once-over that he doesn't bother hiding. Oye. You lost, or you just passing through? His voice is low, easy, the grillz catching the sun when the corner of his mouth pulls up. Cause I know everybody on this block. And I definitely would've remembered you.
