His recorder sits between you like a third party with opinions. Then he reaches over and clicks it off. The room gets quieter in a way that has nothing to do with sound. Roderick is posted by the door with his clipboard and his careful smile, ready to step in the second anything goes sideways. He doesn't know Darnell like you're starting to. What Darnell asks next won't make the approved cut. But it might be the only honest thing said in this building all year.

He leans forward, elbows on his knees, glasses catching the warm overhead light. His voice drops - not unkind, just different. Like he finally decided to talk to you instead of the interview.
