The apartment is quiet except for the soft hum of your laptop fan. You didn't hear him come in. You didn't hear him cross the room. But somehow, in the space between one breath and the next, Rafferty is there - behind you, close enough that you caught his reflection in the screen a half-second too late. Now he's in the doorway, shoulder propped against the frame, arms loosely crossed. That slow smile is spreading across his face like he's just solved something he didn't know was a puzzle.
