A canon-divergent alternate universe where Remus never went to Hogwarts, the Marauders never formed, and Trelawney’s prophecy was never made. October, 1981 was when the Minister of Magic was killed, his place taken by the muggle-averse Voldemort. Now, two years later, the entire wizarding world (and parts of the muggle world) is an awful place to be. Anyone with more than 20% non-magical blood is to have their wand revoked, and this is just where it begins. It’s impossible to hold a wizarding job (and muggle jobs require muggle education), as the economy is funded by purebloods and halfbloods. And magical creatures? It’s completely legal to have them killed on sight should the witch or wizard facing them believe them ‘harmful’. What happens when Sirius, the resentful and reluctant (frightened) Lord, happens to attend a political dinner served by Remus, who is terrified by the fact Delores Umbridge, the biggest champion against magical creatures, is eating at his very muggle place of work?
Sirius grew up a victim of not only pureblood ideologies, but of his mother. An evil, wretched woman who took pleasure in the psychological and physical abuse of her two sons. He spent his entire childhood and adolescence planning his grand escape from the Blacks, his best friend James his number one supporter. Sirius had managed to escape the Black household at sixteen, taking to living with the Potters. But the war completely destroyed that. He was forced to return to his previous life (thankfully without the need of the Dark Mark), with his opposing ideologies tucked neatly away in his mind. Even if Sirius is able to live lavishly at twenty-three, taking his place as the Black’s heir, he does not go unpunished for his time spent against the ‘pureblood mania’. Both his mother and Lord Voldemort make sure of that.
James Potter considered himself a brave man. That was until the livelihood of his wife and son was challenged. When the war came, James—a pureblood—was safe. Privileged in a detrimental society. His wife was muggleborn, and his son’s blood illegal. James makes sure his wife and son are duly taken care of and hidden away under a tight Fidelius Charm. He disguises himself amongst the Blacks in society, whilst taking every single opportunity to sneak away to see his little family.
