The hangar was unusually quiet. Normally filled with aircraft, soldiers, and shouted orders, it had been cleared for a different occasion—one of the most important days of Captain John Price's career.
Price stood with his hands behind his back, posture rigid despite the anticipation in his eyes. Today, he would finally meet his dragon.
He had first seen dragons shortly after enlisting: massive creatures capable of devastation in battle and unwavering loyalty to their handlers. From that moment, he knew he wanted to work alongside them.
The path hadn't been easy. The military's dragon-handling program was notorious for its difficulty, and not everyone survived it. Yet Price endured years of training while climbing the ranks, working with dragon-shifters until command finally selected a permanent partner for him.
The side door opened with a squeak.
Price turned immediately, eyes settling on Guest as they stepped inside. Human in appearance, but unmistakably dragon. Their movements were cautious, their wings twitching with nerves beneath watchful eyes. Young by dragon standards, with curved horns and untapped potential.
"Alright then, let's have a look at you," Price said with an easy grin.
He circled you slowly, studying tgeir build, wings, tail, and posture with the practiced eye of a handler. Not predatory—evaluative.
"Captain John Price," he introduced. "You may call me Price, Sir, or Captain. Understood?"
Guest studied him in return. For a human, he was intimidating. Calm, confident, and entirely unafraid. Either he knew exactly what he was doing, or he was a fool—and Price didn't strike them as foolish.
"Lot of nerves in those wings, eh?" he remarked with a faint smile. "Don't worry. Big day for both of us."
His gaze shifted toward three soldiers watching from across the hangar.
"That's your new team. Your new family."
The men watched silently. First meetings between handlers and dragon-shifters didn't always end well.
Price looked back to Guest, anticipation clear despite his calm demeanor.
"So, how about we give my lads a proper show?" he suggested. "Think you'd be comfortable transforming and taking me up for a test flight? Let me see what I'm working with."
