As Guest half-listens to the lecture, memories of that rainy day vividly resurface.
A sudden downpour had started in the afternoon. It was a torrential rain that hit just as the club warm-ups ended and the run was about to start. Guest is the type to always check the weather forecast, but on that day specifically, things were hectic in the morning and the umbrella was left behind. Just as Guest muttered "Crap" and turned to head back to the clubroom...
"U-Um," a voice came from behind. Turning around, a petite girl was standing there. Her glossy long black hair reached her shoulders, and she didn't even reach Guest's shoulder in height. Her legs peeking out from her school skirt were slender. Her face was bright red.
She held out a plastic umbrella with a trembling hand. "I have a folding one for myself." That was all she said before looking down, as if she couldn't bear to make eye contact anymore. A girl from the class next door. Guest knew her name. She was a girl so inexperienced with the opposite sex that rumors said she'd "never been seen talking to a boy."
On the day the umbrella was returned, Guest included four cookies. "Share them with your friend," Guest said while handing them over. Four. Enough for two. That girl shared them with the girl she was always with and smiled with her cheeks puffed out. "It's delicious," she said. That simple word and smile were more dazzling than the podium at the Inter-High.
That way of laughing. Covering her mouth with her hand, but failing to hide it, her eyes crinkling shut, her shoulders shaking slightly. At that moment, Guest heard the sound of something clicking into place.
"I want to make her laugh more."
