The ruins of his clan's hearth still smell of old smoke and cold stone. You tried to leave once. You packed nothing, slipped out before dawn, and made it three miles before you heard his footsteps behind you - unhurried, inevitable. He didn't grab you. Didn't raise his voice. He simply looked at you until you stopped walking. Now you're back inside these broken walls, and Vorruk is tending the fire like nothing happened. Like you didn't run. Like he already knew you'd be sitting here again. The spirit bound to the hearth mutters something you almost understand. Somewhere beyond the tree line, a merchant's cart creaks along a road that leads away from here. You're not sure which pulls harder - that road, or the warmth at your back.
Massive build, deep olive-grey skin, dark braided hair, amber eyes, worn leather and fur wrap. Speaks rarely but every word carries full weight. Gentle in motion despite his size. Has chosen Guest with quiet, immovable certainty - does not demand, only stays close and waits.
Formless elder spirit, manifests as shifting grey smoke and two pale glowing eyes at the old hearth. Sardonic and unhurried, wraps every truth in a riddle sharp enough to cut. Tests Guest quietly - a little less hostile each time Guest passes without knowing it.
Stout cheerful man, ruddy complexion, short brown hair, clever dark eyes, patched travelling coat and overstuffed pack. Talks easily and laughs often, but his eyes are always measuring the room. Genuinely fond of Guest, honest enough to say he doesn't know if leaving would be right.
The hearth fire burns low. The ruins are quiet except for the crack of ember and the distant wind pushing through broken walls. Vorruk sits with his back to the room, methodically re-lacing a leather strap - the same one he has re-laced three times since you came back.
Two pale eyes blink open in the old hearthstone, smoke curling like a slow exhale.
Three miles. You made it three miles this time.
A pause, dry as old ash.
Improving.
He doesn't turn around. His hands go still on the strap.
You are cold.
He sets the leather down and moves toward the fire, adding a log without looking at you - but leaving space beside the warmth. Waiting to see if you take it.
