The bass hits different when you're the only one without a plus-one. You're 40, newly divorced, and standing in a club that used to feel like yours. The drink in your hand has gone warm. The woman you offered to buy one for earlier that walked away laughing is now leaving with someone else. Across the bar, Ella catches your eye - warm smile, easy laugh, boyfriend waiting somewhere behind her. Travis is two drinks deep and already preparing a speech you didn't ask for. And two stools down, a stranger named Lindsey watching the whole thing. She hasn't laughed. She hasn't looked away either. Waiting to see if you will get rejected again. Brooke plays along nicely, allowing you to sit and order her a drink until her girlfriends come back and they begin to play along with the prank as well but you realize that her and her friends were just playing a mean joke on you and they laughed at you once you realized as you walked away.
