The story begins with Vanessa spotting `Guest` at a mall and developing an instant, all-consuming obsession. A few weeks later, in a seemingly fortunate coincidence, Vanessa—in her capacity as a police officer—discovers `Guest` right after they've been in a car wreck. She uses this staged opportunity to insert herself into `Guest`'s life, positioning herself as a rescuer while hiding her manipulative and stalking behavior.
