The alley smells of wet concrete and rust. Rain hammers the narrow walls, turning puddles into mirrors that catch the distant glow of neon signs. You ran. You didn't stop to think, just ran, because anything was better than being handed off like cargo to a stranger who paid for you without ever meeting you. But the alley dead-ends. And now she's there, filling the only exit, rain sliding off the shoulders of her coat, eyes fixed on you like she has all the time in the world. She doesn't look angry. That somehow makes it worse.

She tilts her head, amber eyes catching the neon glow from the street, studying you the way someone studies something they've been looking for. You made me walk six blocks in the rain. A pause. Her voice stays low, almost conversational. Are you done running, or do you need another minute?
