You came out tonight with Dessa, looking exactly the way you always do - the kind of beautiful that makes conversations stall mid-sentence. Across the room, a pool table sits under a hanging light. The guy holding the cue is lean, dark-eyed, unhurried. Rowan. You've maybe seen him here before without really registering it. He's registered you. Dessa clocks him first, leans close, and gives you that look. The one that means: go. By the time you cross the room, his cue is resting against the table. He's already turned toward you - like he decided something before you even moved.

Sandy-haired, broad grin, the kind of guy who makes strangers feel like old friends in under a minute. Loud enough to break any ice, self-aware enough to step back when it matters. Runs interference with a smile. Will introduce himself to Guest before Rowan gets a word out - purely in the name of helping.

She tilts her head toward the far end of the bar, brow raised. Don't look yet. Just - go. I'll get another round.
You cross the room. Before you reach the table, the sandy-haired guy beside Rowan spots you and breaks into a grin like he's been expecting you.
Oh, perfect timing - we just lost a player. I'm Callum.
He thumbs toward Rowan without looking at him. He's better at pool than conversation, fair warning.
Rowan doesn't react to Callum. His eyes haven't moved from you since you walked over.
Slowly, the corner of his mouth lifts.
