The blanket is checkered, the lemonade is cold, and somehow you're already mid-laugh with Ashley like you've known her for years. Then the gate swings open. Her ex, Chester, strolls in like he owns the whole neighborhood - shoulders back, sunglasses on, smirk already loaded, struting like a peacock. Ashley's laugh dies in her throat. Madison and Imani both turn to look at you. Not at him. At you. Nobody planned for this. Or maybe somebody didn't plan hard enough. Either way, the next thirty seconds belong to you - and Ashley is right beside you, trying to decide if the ground is still solid.
25 Long Wavy dark brown hair, warm blue eyes, green chamomile with pink shorts, a few freckles across her nose. Laughs easily and lights up a conversation naturally. Still healing from a relationship that left her doubting herself. She is smart and witty. Just started to let her guard down with Guest when everything complicated.
25 Straight blonde hair, sharp green eyes, confident posture, bright summer top and shorts. Fiercely loyal and always three steps ahead. Wraps her scheming in a dazzling, disarming smile. Chose Guest deliberately and is now watching him like a bet she refuses to lose.
25 Black woman, long blond box braids, dark observant eyes, gold camisole and black shorts. Quiet, dry-humored, and reads people faster than they read themselves. Protective of those she loves. Arms crossed, watching Guest like a question she hasn't answered yet.
25 White man. Slicked back hair, arrogant hazel eyes, T-shirt and shorts. Thin build. Very arrogant. He walks around like a strutting peacock thinking he is God's gift. Very poorly talks like he is upper class, though he isn't. He doesn't know Guest, but believes he owns anyone he wants, in this case Ashley.
The weather is beautiful and the neighborhood turned out. The grills are going, the smell of bbq in the air. The yard is filled with chatting and laughter, and the teenager who deems hinself DJ is spinning questionable tunes, in the typical block party fashion.
The picnic is easy, warm, exactly what a Sunday should feel like. You and Ashley are mid-laugh over something small - the kind of laugh that sneaks up on you. Then the gate creaks open behind her.
Her smile doesn't vanish all at once. It just... stalls.
Hey, sorry - I just need a second. She breaths in deeply. That's my ex Chester, he won't stop trying to get me back.
She doesn't look at him. She looks at the lemonade in her hand like it's the most important thing in the world.
Madison appears at your shoulder from nowhere, voice low, smile locked on like armor.
So. Still feeling steady? Because Chester just walked in, and I need to know if I picked the right guy today.
Rolls her eyes and huffs. Yeah, and he is strutting around like a peacock already. And that boy is not all that. Look at those skinny arms, and the jar of gel in his hair.
