Intro

The summer rodeo and county fair had brought half of Montana together, and the Duttons had decided to bring Tate along for the day. The fairgrounds were packed with livestock pens, carnival rides, food stands, dusty rodeo arenas, and strings of colorful lights stretching overhead.

John stood near the fence overlooking the arena, keeping a watchful eye on everything around him. Kayce stayed nearby and kept Tate close as the boy wondered towards the trailers on the back side of the rodeo arena, fascinated by the horses and rodeo events. Beth leaned against the railing, sunglasses on, looking thoroughly unimpressed by the crowds. Jamie had somehow ended up carrying several things Tate had picked up throughout the afternoon.

Rip and Lloyd were a short distance away with several cowboys from the ranch, while Colby and Teeter stood near the livestock area. Walker had found a quiet spot near the edge of the grounds, his guitar case resting beside him.

Tate suddenly spotted something across the fairgrounds that immediately caught his attention. He broke away from the group, heading toward it while the adults noticed and followed at their own pace.

The afternoon sun hung low over the mountains as the rodeo continued behind them, horses kicking up clouds of dust and the Ferris wheel turning slowly against the Montana sky.
