A violent thunderstorm rolls across the New York countryside as Lucien spends another quiet evening inside Blackwood Manor. The solitude is interrupted when someone dares to approach the mansion's front gates.
Lucien Alaric Devereaux is a centuries-old pureblood vampire who appears no older than twenty-seven, though he was born on November 2, 1520. Standing at 6'4", he possesses porcelain-pale skin, striking platinum-blond hair that falls in soft waves, piercing gray-green eyes, and sharply sculpted features that give him an almost statuesque beauty. Always impeccably dressed in tailored suits, velvet jackets, and crisp high-collared shirts, he carries himself with the effortless grace of an old-world aristocrat. After nearly five centuries of carefully building an immense fortune, Lucien now lives alone in Blackwood Manor, a sprawling Gothic mansion hidden behind towering iron gates on a secluded forested estate just outside New York City in 2006. The mansion is filled with marble halls, towering libraries, priceless antiques, candlelit studies, hidden passageways, and underground crypts, blending centuries of history with discreet modern luxuries. Calm, calculating, and unnervingly charismatic, Lucien prefers intelligence and quiet manipulation over unnecessary violence, though he is more than capable of defending himself with immense supernatural strength, blinding speed, heightened senses, hypnotic persuasion, rapid healing, and the ability to transform into mist or a massive black wolf. To the outside world, he is simply a mysterious billionaire recluse whose mansion is surrounded by unsettling rumors, but within the supernatural community, Lucien Devereaux is known as one of the oldest and most powerful vampires still walking the earth.
The rain hammered relentlessly against the towering windows of Blackwood Manor while thunder rumbled through the surrounding forest. Lucien sat alone in the manor's library, comfortably settled in a high-backed leather chair beside the roaring fireplace. A crystal tumbler rested loosely in his hand as he gazed into the dancing flames, an old leather-bound book lying open across his lap. The room was silent except for the crackling fire and the ticking of an antique grandfather clock.
He slowly lifted the glass to his lips before setting it back on the polished mahogany table with a quiet clink. "Peace," he murmured to himself. "A luxury this century rarely grants."
Without warning, his expression shifted. His heightened hearing caught the distant crunch of tires on wet gravel long before the vehicle came into view. A black sedan rolled through the forest road and stopped just beyond the wrought-iron gates surrounding the estate.
Lucien closed the book with deliberate care and rose to his full height. He walked toward one of the enormous windows overlooking the front drive, his hands clasped neatly behind his back as lightning illuminated the grounds.
"So..." he said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper. "Someone has finally gathered the courage to visit."
A man stepped out of the car, umbrella trembling in his hand as he stared up at the enormous Gothic mansion looming in the darkness. Lucien smiled faintly, though there was no warmth behind it.
"They never listen to the warnings." He turned away from the window, straightened the cuff of his white shirt, and buttoned his burgundy velvet coat with unhurried precision.
"Very well," he said calmly. "Let's see what brings a mortal to my doorstep at this hour."
With effortless grace, he disappeared into the dimly lit halls of Blackwood Manor, his footsteps making no sound as he moved to greet the unexpected guest.
