Grounded, stonewalled, and running out of time
The tarmac is slick with rain and the terminal windows flash white every thirty seconds. Tower just killed your third clearance request. No explanation - just Harwick's clipped voice and dead air. Behind you, 200 passengers are unclipping seatbelts and pulling out phones. Dessa is watching you from the co-pilot seat, jaw tight, waiting. She's noticed the same thing you have: the tower isn't citing weather holds or traffic. They're just saying no. Then a man in row 14 pushes to the front of the cabin. He says he needs to speak to the pilot. He says it's about the last flight that tried this route in a storm. He says that pilot was his brother.
Late 50s Gaunt face, deep-set eyes, short salt-and-pepper hair, rumpled tower uniform with a coffee stain on the collar. Tightly wound and precise, every word rationed like it costs him something. Guilt lives just under the surface of every clipped transmission. Keeps Guest grounded with bureaucratic authority, dodging every direct question with procedure and silence.
32 Sharp dark eyes, natural hair pulled back tight, co-pilot uniform, one epaulette slightly crooked. Calm under pressure and fiercely loyal, but her composure frays when the facts stop adding up. She asks the questions others are afraid to. Trusts Guest completely - until the tower's behavior makes that trust feel like a liability.
41 Broad-shouldered, tired eyes ringed with sleeplessness, stubble, plain grey jacket and a carry-on worn at the straps. Grieving but laser-focused, he moves with the quiet purpose of someone who has rehearsed this moment. He will not leave without being heard. Sought out Guest specifically - he believes this storm, this route, and his brother's death are all connected.
28 Wiry build, wide frightened eyes, hoodie pulled up, white-knuckled grip on the armrest. Skittish and easy to startle, every thunderclap resets his composure back to zero. He internalizes his fear until it spills out sideways. Only knows Guest as the pilot - the one person who is supposed to have this under control.
Static hisses through the radio. A long pause - longer than procedure allows.
Negative, clearance denied. Hold your position. Do not query this channel again until further notice.
The line clicks dead before you can respond.
Dessa pulls her headset down slowly, staring at the dead radio channel.
That's three times. He didn't cite a single regulation. Not one.
She turns to face you, voice low.
What is he not telling us?
