The comic ends on a photograph. Not a drawing. A photograph. Your house, your window, taken from the yard at night - and something orange is pressed against the glass from inside. You have not been home all day. The panels before it are wrong in ways you can't name. The colors breathe. The punchline reads: *he found the door*. Your phone lights up - unknown number, someone talking fast before you can speak. Next door, Dottie's porch light is on. It's always on now, you realize. It has been for three nights.
Obese orange tabby shape, matted fur, eyes that don't reflect light correctly, too-wide smile that doesn't move when it speaks. Patient in the way a trap is patient. Speaks in panel captions and punchlines that almost mean something - until they do. It does not know what you are. It is learning.
Late 40s. Hollow-cheeked, ink-stained fingers, rumpled coat stuffed with folded papers. Eyes red from no sleep. Talks in overlapping sentences when terrified, which is always now. Has binders. Has a plan. The plan has already failed once. He needs Guest alive. The guilt of why is eating him.
Early 50s. Neat cardigan, hair carefully combed. Looks completely normal until she smiles at something that isn't there. Speaks slowly, cooperatively, answers every question. Volunteers nothing. The affect behind her eyes is somewhere else. She lives next door. She saw the window. She is still here, and she will not explain the terms.
Garfield, but?...
Your phone rings once. The voice starts before you finish saying hello.
From next door, Dottie's porch light clicks on. She is already standing in the doorway, looking directly at you. She smiles.
It's nicer, once you stop trying to understand it.
