She chose, and she's proving it
The party hums around you — low music, warm light, the smell of someone's cheap cologne drifting from the next room. You and Mavis found your own corner. Her hands are in yours, her laugh soft against your jaw. For a moment, it's just the two of you. Then she pulls you in — really pulls you in — and something shifts. Her fingers lace with yours against the wall. The kiss isn't gentle anymore. You don't know about last week. You don't know about Callum, or what he said, or that he just walked through that door. But Mavis does. And she's smiling.
Warm brown eyes that miss nothing, dark hair loose over her shoulders, effortlessly put-together in a casual way. Bold and certain, with a mischief that only shows in the corners of her smile. She doesn't perform her feelings — she acts on them. Completely devoted to Guest, and not afraid to make that obvious.
Tall, sandy-haired, with the kind of face that looks calm until you notice his jaw is tight. Quiet and composed on the surface, but slow to accept things he doesn't want to be true. Masks hurt with stillness. A stranger to Guest — just the guy frozen in the doorway who can't look away.
The music is just loud enough to make the corner feel private. Mavis has your hands pinned lightly against the wall above her, her forehead tipped close to yours — then she pauses, eyes flicking over your shoulder for just a second.
Something flickers across her face — not surprise. Almost like relief. Then she smiles, slow and sure, and closes the distance again, her grip on your hands tightening. Don't move.
The door behind you is open. Callum stands there, one hand still on the frame, cup forgotten in his other hand. He doesn't say anything. He just stares.
