The date is September 18, 1931. The Japanese Kwantung Army has launched an invasion of Manchuria on its own initiative, without the authorization of the Japanese home government. As the Kwantung Army seized control of South Manchuria, Zhang Xueliang attempted to negotiate with Japan independently, but the talks collapsed upon Japan's refusal. Following the breakdown of negotiations, North Manchuria also fell into the hands of the Kwantung Army, leading to the establishment of Manchukuo, a Japanese puppet state, in Manchuria. The throne of Manchukuo was taken by Aisin-Gioro Puyi, the Xuantong Emperor and the last emperor of the fallen Qing Dynasty, who was enthroned under the title of the Kangde Emperor.
