11:42 PM. In a quiet room like any other, Guest was leaning against the bed, looking at a group chat on their smartphone. Familiar nicknames and endless useless jokes scrolled up the screen.
💬[Minsu]: Hey, do you guys remember? That abandoned hospital on the mountain behind 00-dong. 💬[Junho]: Lol, why there all of a sudden? People were freaking out saying it's haunted. 💬[Minsu]: No, I actually went there today. It was seriously terrifying. I got goosebumps and ran away immediately lol. I even have a proof shot.
Minsu tossed a single photo into the chat. It was a hallway of a dilapidated building with a rusted iron door half-open at the end of a dark corridor. Junho and Seoyeon chimed in, saying things like "I went there last time too" and "The energy there was really intense."
Guest snorted and tapped the keyboard.
💬[Me]: Bullshit. That hospital was demolished ages ago, stop lying. You're just desperate to scare someone. 💬[Minsu]: Whoa, you don't believe me? I'm serious. We've all been there, are you the only one who hasn't? 💬[Seoyeon]: Right, we all posted proof. Don't tell me you're still scared of going near that mountain at night, Guest? ㅋㅋㅋ 💬[Junho]: Wow, Guest is a total wimp. No way they can go. lol
The conversation started as a joke, but the nuance of scratching at their pride began to get annoying. 'You think I can't go?' A surge of irritation boiled up inside.
💬[Me]: This is ridiculous. Just you wait. I'm driving there right now to post a proof shot.
It should have stopped there. But for the sake of that stupid competitive streak, Guest immediately threw on some clothes, grabbed the car keys, and left the house.
About a 2-hour drive from the city. Climbing the winding mountain road relying on a single pair of headlights, the hideous reality of the abandoned hospital, looking like a discarded carcass in the forest, revealed itself. The pitch-black exterior, where even moonlight didn't seem to reach, was far more eerie and ominous than it looked in the smartphone photo.
Guest parked the car in front of the broken iron gate and turned off the engine. Everything was deathly quiet; the only thing audible was Guest's heavy breathing.
Guest: "Sigh... this is crazy. Why the hell did I come here?"
Grumbling, they opened the car door and stepped out. They thought about turning on the smartphone flash but, worried about the battery, decided to rely on the moonlight for now, pushing open the rusted main gate and stepping inside.
The chilly smell of mold and rot stung their nose. With every step, the sound of stepping on glass shards scattered on the floor crunched. It was right then.
SLAM—!
A heavy closing sound, enough to make one's spine tingle, echoed from behind. In a room where not a single breeze blew, the old iron door had slammed shut on its own.
Guest: "What the...?!"
Cold sweat poured down their back in an instant. Panicking, Guest hurriedly pulled the smartphone from their pocket and turned on the screen. As the bright LCD light pushed back the darkness, the device in their hand vibrated. It was a KakaoTalk notification.
With trembling fingers, they opened the group chat app.
But the moment they saw the screen, it felt as if their heart had simply stopped.
💬[Junho]: What time is the exam tomorrow again? 💬[Seoyeon]: They said 9:30. Ah, I haven't studied at all, I'm screwed lol 💬[Minsu]: Hey Guest, wake me up when you go to school tomorrow.
On the screen, there was no trace of the conversation about the abandoned hospital that Guest and their friends had been having until just a moment ago. The friends were peacefully discussing tomorrow's school exams and assignments.
The talk about the abandoned hospital had never existed, not even a single line. There were only ordinary daily conversations from long before—no, from way before I had even left for the mountains.
Their mind went completely blank. It felt as if a cold, bizarre laughter was echoing in their ears.
Guest turned back to look at the iron door that had just closed, as if possessed.
In the darkness where the moonlight could not reach, something with a damp gaze was persistently approaching Guest.
My fingers were trembling so much I couldn't even touch the smartphone screen properly. I barely managed to keep my composure, opened the group chat window, and started spamming messages.
💬[Guest]: Hey, I'm losing it, please someone answer me 💬[Guest]: I'm at the Zeta Abandoned Mental Hospital near OO-gu, save me!! Please!!
However, text only hovered at the top of the screen.
[Call Failed - Out of Service Area]
It was the expected result. Because I had come deep into the mountains, the base station signal was completely cut off. The despair that even the only means to ask for help had vanished weighed down on my entire body.
At that moment, the battery indicator on the screen flickered, and a new notification banner popped up over the group chat window.
My heart dropped. There was no way a message could come through when there was no signal. The moment I checked the screen with trembling hands, I stopped breathing. The sender was Minsu's name, shown in a 1:1 private chat window, not the group chat.
💬[Minsu]: ...t'naw uoy erehw ot kcab og t'nac uoY ...rehtegot reverof eb ll'ew su htiW
The hair on my neck stood up as goosebumps broke out. A cold chill plummeted down my spine.
Ssssk... Sssssk...
As if perfectly timed with that eerie text burning into my eyes, a bizarre noise echoed from the pitch-black darkness behind me. The sound of something dragging across the floor was rapidly approaching along the narrow corridor.
Guest: "Fuck...!"
Survival instincts set off alarms throughout my body. There was no time to look back. I shone the smartphone flash forward as if throwing it and began to run frantically toward the darkness inside, away from the closed main gate.
The breathing of whatever was chasing me felt like it was right against my back. Along with a ear-splitting shriek, the sound of something scratching the walls echoed from all directions. Just as my breath reached its limit and my legs were about to give out, a massive wall appeared along with a faintly glowing emergency exit light.
I stopped, slamming my body against the wall. Hanging there was a floor guide made of old, rusted iron plate.

A maze-like corridor blocked on all sides. Should I go up, or should I go down? From behind, a laughter that couldn't possibly belong to a human continued to draw closer.
