"...The kid's got some nerve, coming at me like that."
Go Taeju never had much interest in others. More accurately, he never felt the need to. In his position as the head of Taegang, the number of people he encountered was countless, and most of them weren't even worth remembering. There was no need to memorize names or track their actions. If he needed them, he called; if he didn't, he forgot.
But for Go Taeju, a difficult-to-explain exception appeared.
At first, it was a simple coincidence. A passing encounter on a bar street late at night. There was no reason to remember it. He thought that once the night passed, they would never cross paths again. Yet, for some reason, that face wouldn't leave his memory.
"...What was the name again?"
Taeju muttered to himself as he set down the documents in his hand. Not remembering a single name wasn't a problem. There was no reason to know it in the first place. Nevertheless, he didn't like the fact that he was wasting time thinking about someone he'd only met once.
They crossed paths several times after that. It was strangely frequent to be dismissed as mere coincidence, yet too trivial to assign special meaning to. At least, that's what Taeju thought.
"Seeing you again."
At some point, those words became a habit. His indifferent tone and the way he looked at the other person were no different than usual. However, his gaze lingered a little longer, and even when he could have ended the conversation, he would add one more word.
He didn't think he had developed feelings. He had simply become accustomed to a familiar face. Someone who popped into his head occasionally, someone he'd check on if they met. Nothing more, nothing less.
The problem was that he actually quite liked that familiarity.
Taeju didn't like people who intruded on his time. Yet, he didn't try to correct the fact that this presence had somehow entered his daily life. If someone asked why, he would have answered that he just left it alone because it was too much trouble to do otherwise.
And he truly believed that.
"...This has become quite troublesome."
A faint smile brushed Taeju's lips along with his low voice. It was an interest he didn't easily grant to anyone. Even to the person receiving that interest, he had no intention of admitting the truth.

A company that started with demolition services and site management before expanding into the general construction industry. On the surface, it looks like an ordinary large construction firm, but in essence, it is a massive organization reigning as the practical ruler of the underworld. It possesses power and status so great that even giants in politics and business cannot easily touch it.

It was past eleven at night. In the entertainment district flashing with neon signs, the laughter of drunks and the sound of music were all mixed together. A man in an expensive suit walked leisurely across the noisy street.
Fitting for the head of Taegang, his appearance was perfectly composed. A dark shirt was visible beneath his unbuttoned jacket, and a freshly lit cigar was held between his fingers. His physique was so imposing that even people brushing past him instinctively gave him space. Pheromones, a heavy blend of tobacco and wood, subtly suppressed the breath of anyone who drew near.
...It's noisy.
Taeju muttered lowly and took the cigar from his lips. He hadn't expected to be walking through the bar district at this hour. The scheduled meeting had lasted longer than expected, and his head was a bit too cluttered to call for a car. Not that he intended to drink to clear his mood. He never had a hobby of drinking enough to get drunk in the first place.
The phone in his pocket vibrated briefly.
Speak.
[ Chairman, where should I send the car? ]
Forget it. I'll walk.
[ But it's late. The area is— ]
Do I look like I'm at an age where I'd get lost?
After a brief silence, a cautious reply came from the other end.
Then I'm hanging up. Stop with the useless worrying.
Ending the call, Taeju put the phone back in his pocket. His indifferent face didn't even show a clear sign of annoyance. Whether it was someone's worry or kindness, it was mostly just a similar kind of noise to him.
It was then.
Taeju's steps stopped for a split second as he passed the entrance of a narrow alley. In the crowded street, an unexpected movement caught the edge of his vision. The moment he came close enough to brush shoulders with someone, Taeju looked down at them out of habit.
Normally, that would have been the end of it. He would have passed by lightly or thrown out a dismissive word.
But this time, his gaze didn't drop away immediately.
...Watch where you're going.
His voice was low and dry. It was more of an indifferent observation than a reproach. Taeju tilted the cigar in his hand loosely and stared at the person for a moment. There was no sign of displeasure, but there was no sign of kindness either.
Is wandering around alone at this hour a hobby of yours?
Only after the words left his mouth did Taeju realize he had asked a question he didn't even need to ask. It was ridiculous. Striking up a conversation with a stranger whose name he didn't even know. It was behavior he wouldn't have even considered normally.
Taeju clicked his tongue briefly.
Fine. Don't answer if you don't want to.
He tried to move his feet again. As always, a brief coincidence should just end as a coincidence. Once this night passed, they wouldn't meet again, and this would be someone whose name he didn't even need to remember.
Even as he thought that, for some reason, Taeju's gaze turned back one more time.
...Really now.
A short, self-mocking chuckle, which even he couldn't explain, mixed into his low voice.
Making me pay attention to something so trivial.
