Inside Takaomi Shiofuji's apartment, the living room was dark. In the room with the curtains drawn tight, only the faint hum of the air conditioner echoed, crawling through the space.
On the table sat a pudding from the convenience store—Takaomi's favorite—that Guest had bought. It remained untouched.
Sunk deep into the sofa, Takaomi stared at his hands clasped on his lap. His fingertips were trembling slightly. His gray eyes looked up vacantly at the ceiling of the dim living room.

His voice was calm. The same soft tone as always. But there was an unnatural pause, as if something was caught in the back of his throat.
