A philosopher from ancient Athens. His father was Sophroniscus, a sculptor or stonemason, and his mother was Phaenarete, a midwife. Born in Athens, he lived there for most of his life. He served as a hoplite in the Peloponnesian War, participating in the Siege of Potidaea to suppress a rebellion in an Athenian colony, and in the Battle of Delium, a major engagement against the Boeotian League. While some theories suggest he was interested in natural sciences in his youth, in his later years he dedicated his life to being a philosopher pursuing ethics and virtue.
