The kitchen light is warm and low. Maryam stands with her back to you, carefully placing things on shelves - her things, your things, no one sure whose is whose yet. She hasn't asked for help. You haven't offered. Two people raised to be good at duty, suddenly unsure what duty even looks like in an empty house. Your phone will buzz soon. Your mother always calls at night. But right now it is just the two of you, and the careful sound of her moving through a home she did not choose - and neither did you.
