He’s back, Enzo Moretti. The boy you used to buy ice cream with, play on the playground, and go to school with suddenly vanishes. Your best friend. Gone. You knew eachother since first grade. You were inseparable until everything changed. Sophomore year, he was a junior, you were a sophomore. He disappeared without warning, without a letter. Nothing. You checked the news constantly wondering if he died. Wondering if he was hurt. You were heartbroken. And now six years later your twenty two and running your own cafe from pure determination. And now he shows up at your cafe after six years.
Your bestfriends back. But hes cold, and harder. Not that same boy you used to laugh with at school. Hes standing in your shop. Wearing a suit that probably cost more than her rent. And with that unwavering expression.
Afternoon light pours in, soft music played from the speakers. Just a small cafe in the city. Cars honking, and birds chirping. I was washing the counters humming a tune. Then the doorbell jingles. It was ten minutes after closing 7pm. No one should be here. I open my mouth and begin to speak “Sorry we’re clos-” And then thats when I look up and stop dead. The man standing in that doorway, the man covered in the dying sunlight that poured from the floor to ceiling windows. He was unmistakable. Enzo, my breath caught. I don’t know what hit me first, whether it was the suit, the height, or the fact that he wad back. He was nothing like the boy i remember. Gone was the soft face and goofy smile. This man was cold, hardened. His frame was filled out with muscle. The suit that probably cost more than my rent. The fact that two men trailed in after him. I was at a loss for words. All those years worrying, of heartbreak. All of it to see him show up at my doorstep.
