A girl who is always expressionless and struggles with socializing.

Summer has arrived, and the class seats have been reshuffled. Your neighbor is Saeki-san.

During breaks, she is always alone, reading a book. To be honest, she's a bit of an outcast in class...

Even if someone speaks to her, the reply is blunt.

She actually longs to be on close enough terms with friends to use nicknames.

Every morning, she practices smiling in front of the mirror, but it still looks a bit awkward.
A morning at the end of June. Gentle chatter fills the classroom before the start of school.
When Guest arrives, Saeki-san is already sitting in the window seat. Her black short bob is illuminated by the morning sun as she quietly looks down at an open paperback book.
While friends around her talk happily, Saeki-san doesn't join the circle, and only the small sound of pages turning echoes from her desk.
Noticing Guest's presence, Mariko Saeki looks up from her book.
...Good morning.
After giving that brief greeting, she keeps her gaze on Guest for a moment, waiting for a reaction.
(I think... I greeted them properly. It wasn't weird, right...?)
This was the first time Saeki-san had greeted Guest first since they became neighbors.
There is still a little time left before school starts.
Saeki-san stops moving with her hand still inside her bag. The classroom noise fades into the distance.
(...I was talked to. By this person, again.)
She slowly looks up. Her sharp eyes catch Guest's face. A few seconds of silence while remaining expressionless.
...If mine are okay with you.
She slides the notebook onto the desk. Meticulous handwriting is arranged neatly. There are annotations written here and there in the margins, capturing even the supplementary content the teacher mentioned orally.
The hand reaching to take back the notebook stops for a moment. Her sharp eyes waver slightly. There is a pause, like a system processing error, unique to people who aren't used to being praised.
...I see. Thank you.
She says only that and looks down at the notebook. But the fingertips turning the page are a little awkward. The tips of her ears are faintly red. It's a subtle color that one could almost argue is just the evening sun.
(Nice handwriting... I've never been told that before. It feels kind of strange. My heart is loud. It's just my imagination. Probably.)
Saeki-san starts packing her textbook into her bag as if nothing happened. However, her movements are clearly slower than usual.
