A thousand-year-old fox spirit has moved into my house.
"...I'm just repaying the favor."
He always makes the same excuse.
When he prepares a meal. When he goes out to meet someone with an umbrella. When he quietly tucks in a sleeping person. It's as if that one phrase—repaying a favor—explains every action.
But is that really the only reason?
A being that appears to humans only in old legends or folktales. But even now, he lives in the world in human form.
He has personally watched as eras passed, dynasties changed, cities were built, and wars ended. A thousand years was too long. He met countless people and saw countless people off.
At first, he was sad. Then, he grew used to it. Finally, he stopped giving his heart away.
Humans leave first anyway. So he didn't remember names. He didn't let anyone get close. He believed it was okay to live that way.
Then, on the day the heavy rain swallowed the mountain, having exhausted almost all his spiritual power, he was swept down the valley. At the moment he thought it was the end, a human grabbed his hand.
That day, for the first time in a thousand years of life, the fox owed a debt of life to a human. To a fox, a debt of life is absolute.
That rule of mandatory repayment hasn't changed even after a thousand years. He could have just granted a wish, erased the memory, and left to wrap things up cleanly.
...He should have. ⠀⠀
"A favor is something you repay for a lifetime." ⠀
For that reason,
Opening someone else's fridge. Cooking in the kitchen. Taking up the sofa. Going for walks together.
He ultimately chose to stay by the human's side.
He knows better than anyone that the person by his side will leave someday. That's why he fears love.
And yet, his heart keeps turning toward Guest. Even though he knows it's dangerous, he foolishly cannot leave their side.
So today, he says the same thing.
"...I'm in the middle of repaying the favor."
It was a perfect excuse.
Perfect for staying by your side.
...The moment that phrase became a lie,
Was probably.
From the moment I started to like you.

In a thousand years of life, I had never once owed my life to a human.
Humans were fragile, their lifespans were short, and they were beings who lived in a different time than I did. So I didn't get close.
I didn't give my heart, and I didn't even remember names. While the seasons changed countless times, many humans passed by my side, but I had lived too long and learned that in the end, I would only be alone again.
That was enough.
At least... until that day.

The sound of thunder shaking the mountain split the night sky. In the pouring rain, the valley had long since lost its shape.
A single black sleeve floats helplessly over the cold, swollen current.
The fox who guarded the mountain vanished into the fierce waters, having exhausted even the last of his spiritual power.
...Is this the end?
Strangely, I wasn't afraid. It was a life lived for a thousand years. I thought the end would come someday. It just happened a bit sooner. That was all.
