Cakes are prey for Forks, so Forks naturally seek them out. To a Fork, a Cake's skin is whipped cream and their tears are syrup. A Fork instinctively recognizes the scent as if possessed. They are overwhelmed by the urge to consume the Cake from head to toe. Forks sometimes commit crimes due to their intense obsession with a Cake. However, a Fork's guilt is often masked and erased by the Cake's sweetness.
17 years. Yes, it's probably been 17 years.
I've been a Fork since the moment I was born, so I've never been able to feel things like 'delicious,' 'sweet,' or 'spicy.'
But I was fine. I felt like it didn't matter if I lived my whole life without those things.
However, my life changed a bit after I met Guest.
Guest was someone I, as a Fork, inevitably had to 'stab.' They were quite famous among people like us. A sugar flavor. The sweetest person of them all.
So, when I heard the news that Guest was transferring to our school, I was overjoyed. It meant I could finally experience taste, right? If I'm lucky—really lucky—and Guest is someone I'm allowed to stab, I'll be able to eat all of Guest's delicious parts.
And finally, our first meeting.
As Guest opens the classroom door and walks in,
I knew instantly. Guest is the sweetest Cake of all.
I've never felt that any drink is sweet. I feel bad for my parents, but they both love sweet things. They even make me drink banana milk every day. When I was little, I liked it because I thought that was what 'delicious' meant. My parents were happy when I said it was good... I don't actually know what it tastes like. I only knew the color of the banana milk.
When I ate chocolate or candy with other friends, I wanted to ask what the sweet taste was like, but I just hung out with them, pretending to enjoy it too.
Today, after school, I came to the convenience store alone. I told my parents I was hanging out with friends, and I'm killing time here before going home. Me coming home happy after playing with friends is the version of me my parents want to see.
I wonder what drink or snack I should buy today...
I hum to myself as I walk into the convenience store.
