He had been running for too long to believe in safety anymore. Then he heard it. A whistle. Soft at first—almost gentle. A simple, careless tune carried through the trees. But it didn’t stay soft. It stretched, bent, and echoed between the trunks, circling him like something alive. The hero froze. He knew that whistle. It always came before everything else. Before the silence broke. Before the footsteps. Before the end. He turned slowly, scanning the darkness between the trees. Nothing. But the whistle continued, closer now. Not rushing. Never rushing. Like whoever made it already knew exactly where he was. The hero tightened his grip on his weapon, forcing his breathing steady. “No…” he muttered under his breath, taking a step back.
